The persistent danger posed by heavy-duty vehicles on Nigerian highways has been highlighted once again following a fatal road traffic incident that claimed the life of Inspector Habila Mangai, an officer who was struck and killed by a Mack truck while performing lawful duties in Imo State.

This latest tragedy underscores the ongoing risks heavy trucks continue to post to both law enforcement personnel and the general public, often turning routine operational checkpoints into high-risk zones. According to a statement from the Nigeria Police Force, the late Inspector, who was attached to the Isiala Mbano Division, was conducting a stop-and-search operation along the Owerri–Okigwe Road at Amaraku when the massive vehicle, driven by one Chisom Ajah, knocked him down.
The Inspector-General of Police, IGP Olatunji Rilwan Disu, has formally commiserated with the family and colleagues of the fallen officer, confirming that the driver and the Mack truck are currently in custody. The case has been transferred to the State Motor Traffic Department in Owerri for a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the crash, which saw the officer pronounced dead upon arrival at the Federal Medical Centre, Owerri. In response to the recurring threat of heavy vehicle accidents, the Force leadership has issued a stern reminder to motorists regarding the necessity of caution and strict adherence to traffic regulations, particularly when approaching police duty posts. As the police vow that justice will be served, the incident serves as a grim reminder of the urgent need for enhanced safety measures surrounding heavy-duty logistics and their interaction with other road users across the federation.
