AKHA Mandates Clampdown On Unregistered Construction Trucks, Ors Amid Safety Fears

UYO, AKWA IBOM

The Akwa Ibom State House of Assembly has mandated an urgent and strict clampdown on unregistered and unidentified vehicles, particularly heavy-duty trucks belonging to construction companies operating within the state.

The resolution, passed during Tuesday’s plenary, followed a motion sponsored by the member representing Mkpat Enin State Constituency, Mr. Uwem Peter Imoh-Ita. The action is deemed critical because these unidentified vehicles, which often lack traceable registration, pose serious threats to public safety, frequently being involved in road accidents, property damage, or fatalities, without suffering accountability.

Following the resolution, the House directed the Commissioner of Police, Akwa Ibom State Command, CP Baba Mohammed Azare, to ensure the strict enforcement of the Governor’s existing directive banning the covering of vehicle number plates.

Furthermore, the House urged the Commissioner for Works and Fire Service, Prof. Eno Ibanga, to immediately instruct all construction firms operating within the state to ensure that every vehicle in their fleet, including heavy-duty trucks, is duly registered and assigned a valid number plate.

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) was also mandated to intensify surveillance and enforcement efforts to ensure full compliance with vehicle registration and identification laws across Akwa Ibom State.

Presiding over the session, Speaker of the House, Elder Udeme Otong, instructed the Clerk of the Assembly, Mrs. Nsikakabasi Orok, to officially communicate the resolution to the appropriate quarters for necessary action and compliance.
