ZARIA, KADUNA
A fuel tanker fire at a filling station in the Sabon Gari Local Government Area of Zaria, Kaduna State, left one person injured on Tuesday, adding to the anxieties of residents already grappling with the recent hike in Premium Motor Spirit (PMS) pump prices.
The incident occurred at approximately 10:00 a.m. at Prestige Filling Station in the Dogarawa area. The fire broke out while a truck was conveying PMS, a commodity that has become increasingly precious and costly for Nigerians following recent price adjustments in the energy sector.

The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) confirmed the outbreak through its verified X account, stating that the tanker driver sustained various degrees of injuries while attempting to manage the initial spark. Preliminary reports indicate that the tanker driver was immediately evacuated to a nearby hospital for medical attention. The NEMA Kaduna Operations Office swiftly activated a multi-agency response, coordinating efforts with the Federal Fire Service, local authorities, and the National Orientation Agency (NOA).
The combined efforts of the fire service personnel prevented the inferno from spreading to neighboring businesses and residential buildings, which could have led to a much larger catastrophe in the densely populated area. During the operation, officials from the NOA conducted on-site public sensitization, urging panicked residents and business owners to remain calm and steer clear of the danger zone due to the high volatility of the fuel.
The timing of the fire has sparked concerns among local transporters and traders, as the loss of a full tanker of PMS represents a significant economic blow amid the current hike in fuel pump prices. By Tuesday afternoon, NEMA confirmed that the fire had been successfully contained and normalcy was gradually returning to Dogarawa. However, the agency has urged residents and business operators to remain vigilant and comply strictly with safety guidelines, noting that it will continue to monitor the situation and provide updates as necessary.
