MALUMFASHIA, KATSINA STATE
A solar battery explosion in a commercial outlet has wreaked havoc on a business hub, destroying goods and property worth millions of naira and affecting no fewer than 13 shops used as stores and boutiques, highlighting critical safety vulnerabilities in market environments.
The incident occurred at Haiba Plaza, located opposite the Malumfashi Central Market in the Malumfashi Local Government Area of Katsina State, on Wednesday, January 7, 2026. The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), Kaduna Operations Office, confirmed that preliminary findings pointed to the solar battery as the ignition source for the inferno.
Despite the destruction of property, safety protocols and a swift emergency response prevented a tragedy. NEMA confirmed that no loss of life or injuries were recorded. The rapid intervention of emergency personnel ensured the fire was contained quickly, preventing it from spreading to adjoining structures in the densely populated commercial area.
The safety operation was a coordinated effort led by NEMA in collaboration with the Malumfashi and Kafur Local Government Fire Services, the Nigeria Police Force, the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), and local authorities. First aid groups, including JIBWIS and JNI, were also on the ground to provide support. The Chairman of Malumfashi Local Government Council, Hon. Muntari Abdullahi City, was present to oversee the response.
Authorities have confirmed that the fire has been successfully extinguished and the situation is fully under control, though the incident serves as a stark reminder of the need for strict electrical safety measures in commercial plazas.
