Caution As Bandits Intensify Attacks in N/West Following US Airstrikes

SOKOTO, NIGERIA

Barely 24 hours after a United States airstrike targeted insurgent positions in Tambuwal local government area, suspected bandits have launched a deadly retaliatory offensive on the Riji community in Rabah local government area of Sokoto state. The attack, which occurred on Friday, December 26, has heightened fears of a violent backlash against civilian populations across the northwest region.

Local sources report that the assailants stormed Riji in large numbers, overwhelming the community in an operation that left four persons dead. In a move calculated to instill fear and secure ransom leverage, approximately 30 women were forcibly taken from the community and marched into the forests. This mass abduction marks a disturbing escalation in hostility, suggesting that criminal gangs, agitated by the recent aerial bombardments on their hideouts, are redirecting their aggression toward vulnerable rural settlements that lack heavy security fortification.

The violence in Rabah follows a significant military operation carried out on Christmas Day in Jabo, Tambuwal local government area. Security reports indicated that a precision airstrike was launched to dismantle a logistics hub utilized by terror factions. However, there are concerns that such strikes often have the immediate side effect of scattering insurgents into neighboring territories, where they seek to assert dominance and recoup losses through reprisal attacks on soft targets.

There is the need for travelers in Sokoto, Kebbi, and Zamfara states to exercise extreme caution as the conflict enters a volatile new phase. There is a strong indication that displaced bandits are migrating toward bordering areas, increasing the risk of ambushes on civilians. The public is advised to restrict movement along major transit axes, particularly the Sokoto-Gusau and Sokoto-Illela roads, during late afternoon and evening hours. Communities in outlying districts are encouraged to reactivate local vigilance systems and immediately report any unusual movements of large groups of motorcyclists to security operatives, as the region braces for further aftershocks from the intensified military campaign.
