AUCHI, EDO STATE
A post-impact assessment of the devastating tanker fire in Auchi, Etsako West Local Government Area, has revealed extensive damage, with 73 households affected and 92 structures, comprising residential buildings and shops, destroyed or damaged, authorities confirmed on Saturday.
The assessment, conducted by the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) Benin Operations Office in collaboration with the Edo State Emergency Management Agency (Edo SEMA) and other state officials, disclosed that 53 residential buildings were partially destroyed. Additionally, 39 shops suffered serious damage, causing significant disruption to livelihoods and economic activities in the area.

The incident, which occurred on December 17, 2025, was triggered by fuel spillage that flowed into an underground drainage corridor, leading to explosions at multiple points along the channel.
The joint assessment team, which included the Chief of Staff to the Edo State Governor, the Commissioner for Public Safety and Security, and the Director General of the Edo State Fire Service, visited the scene to determine the full extent of the destruction.
During the exercise, officials also visited victims receiving treatment at the Auchi Teaching Hospital and Amazing Grace Hospital.
“It was observed that victims who sustained minor injuries, including cuts, lacerations, and shock, responded positively to treatment and were subsequently discharged,” the report noted.
However, several victims who sustained severe second- and third-degree burns remain hospitalised and are currently undergoing specialised medical care.
Authorities have not yet released a financial estimate of the losses, but the destruction of nearly 40 businesses suggests a heavy economic toll on the local community.
