FRSC Vows to Intensify Crackdown on Overloading, Night Journeys

ABUJA, NIGERIA

The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has announced it will intensify enforcement against overloading and carry out advocacy to discourage night journeys across Nigerian highways, following a fatal crash on the Obajana–Lokoja route that claimed ten lives and injured eleven others on Friday, October 10, 2025.

In a press statement signed by Assistant Corps Marshal Olusegun Ogungbemide, the Corps Public Education Officer, the FRSC confirmed that the tragedy occurred on Friday, October 10, 2025, at about 11:30 PM, involving a white Toyota Hiace commercial bus. Preliminary investigations indicated the cause was a combination of speed violation (SPV) and wrongful overtaking (WOV) on the part of the driver during a night trip.

The Corps Marshal, Shehu Mohammed, was quoted in the statement as warning that night travel and excessive speeding remain major causes of fatal road crashes. He called on commercial operators to adhere strictly to safety regulations, emphasizing that the Corps would step up efforts to curb these high-risk behaviours.

“The Corps will intensify its enforcement on Overloading and advocacy to discourage Night Journey across critical corridors in Nigeria,” the statement affirmed.

Of the 21 passengers involved, 10 were killed on the spot, while 11 sustained varying degrees of injuries. The FRSC urged passengers to be proactive and vigilant, cautioning that “silence in the face of recklessness is complicity in tragedy,” and encouraged the public to report reckless drivers immediately using the FRSC toll-free number 122.
