The Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has recently launched a new centralized passport production system that could see Nigerians receive their passports within just two weeks.

Minister of Interior, Dr. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, announced the development Thursday during an inspection of the new Centralised Passport Personalisation Centre at the NIS Headquarters in Abuja. He highlighted the significance of the project, stating that it is a major milestone since the establishment of the NIS in 1963 and the first time the country will operate a single production center for passports.

With a massive new capacity of 4,500 to 5,000 passports per day, the system is said to be meeting daily demands in as little as four to five hours. Tunji-Ojo described the reform as a significant upgrade from the old machines that produced only 250 to 300 passports daily, promising to end the long delays that have plagued citizens for years.

“The project is 100% ready. Nigeria can now be more productive and efficient in delivering passport services,” said Dr. Tunji-Ojo.

He added that this centralization aligns with global standards, promising improved uniformity and enhanced integrity of Nigerian travel documents worldwide. The reform, the minister noted, is a step toward bringing services closer to Nigerians and aligns with President Bola Tinubu’s reform agenda to boost the NIS’s capacity and improve service delivery.
